She will receive a $100 gift certificate to any bookstore in the Phoenix Union High School District. Congratulations Lena!
TOBACCO PREVENTION PROGRAM - Dr. Lester Tukan, a CHL 3rd degree red belt, undertook a teaching project as his red belt community service project. He used a curriculum based tobacco prevention program and incorporated his medical knowledge and experience into a series of six interactive lectures for 90 sixth grade students at Gateway Elementary School. The main focus of these lessons was to educate the children about tobacco, its physical effects, addictive properties, and its continued popularity among youngsters. Additionally, through the use of videos and role-playing, the program also taught the students refusal skills they could use to deter them from becoming involved in the use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and other dangerous activities. Thank you Lester---what a great way to give back to the community.
CONDITIONING CLASS - Dr. Steve Erickson, a CHL 2nd degree red belt is teaching a weekly conditioning class on Monday evenings at the Foley dojang for all CHL students 12 years and older. Steve's red belt project is benefiting all who want to improve their cardio endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. His knowledge and expertise in sports medicine is very apparent as he leads his students through drills and movements that enhance one's physical martial arts training. The core message Steve embeds in his student's mind is the concept that your focus and dedication must be ongoing and with each class, as with each day in your life, you should surpass today what you were yesterday. This is expressed in the Japanese culture as kaizen (kigh-zen), which translates to "continuous improvement." Newcomers are always welcome. Challenge yourself ---experience kaizen.
BUNKO FUNDRAISER - Bunko was held on May 12, 2007 at the Boys and Girls Club in Scottsdale. It was a fun-filled family evening of dice rolling, eating, bidding on silent auction items, raffles, raffles, and more raffles, and most importantly the beginning of new friendships and strengthening current bonds. It was a tremendous fundraiser (approx. $8000) that will assist our school to continue inspiring all people to lead peaceful and compassionate lives. Kudos to Steve Erickson and Michelle Szymanowski for the dynamite job they did co-chairing this annual event.
